Some people never become part of your story..

Not in the official way, at least.. They don’t show up in the photos you keep, or in the anecdotes you tell at dinner.. You don’t introduce them as “the person who changed everything,” and there is no clear chapter where they arrive and then leave..

Instead, they become part of your “what if.”

They live in the quiet margins of your life, in the versions of yourself you never quite became.. Their presence is less like a memory and more like a soft echo, something you can’t fully catch, but can’t fully ignore either..
You go on. You grow up. You make choices that have nothing to do with them.. And yet, somewhere in the background, there’s a version of you that once turned slightly toward them, then stopped..

Years pass.. Life fills up with appointments, responsibilities, new faces, and new worries.. You forget to think about them on purpose. They are not a conscious reference point anymore.. You stop replaying old conversations in your head.. You stop searching their name online.. One day, you notice you haven’t thought of them in months, and then you forget that you noticed..

You forget their name.. It becomes harder to say it out loud without hesitating.. At first, you remember the first name but not the last.. Later, even the first name feels uncertain, like you might be mixing them up with someone else.. You might remember a nickname, or the way it sounded when they laughed, but the letters themselves begin to blur.. Their name becomes less a word and more a small, private silence..

You forget their face.. The details disappear first.. Was it their left eyebrow that rose when they were amused, or the right? Did they have a small scar, or is that your mind adding texture where there was none?

You lose the exact color of their eyes, the precise curve of their mouth, the way they stood when they were tired.. You might hold on to a single snapshot, how they looked on a bus, at a doorway, under a streetlight, but even that image grows softer around the edges, as if time keeps gently erasing and redrawing it..

But somehow you never forget the feeling.. The feeling is what lingers, long after the facts have faded.. It’s not always intense. Sometimes it’s just a quiet tug in your chest when you hear a certain song, or pass through a place that feels strangely familiar.. It might be the sense of having been seen a little more clearly than usual, or the ache of almost saying something you never found the courage to voice.. It might be the warmth of possibility, or the subtle grief of a door you never opened..

The feeling remembers what your mind lets go of.. It remembers the moment you chose differently, or didn’t choose at all.. It remembers the path that forked, the instinct you pushed aside, the softness you didn’t fully trust..

And so they remain, not as a person you actively miss, but as a small shift in your inner landscape.. They are the shape of an unmade decision, the outline of a conversation that never happened, the ghost of a life you could have lived but didn’t..

What’s a “what if” you’ll probably remember forever?

Maybe it’s the message you typed and never sent..
The phone call you thought about making, then talked yourself out of..
The invitation you almost accepted before you came up with a reason to stay home..

Maybe it’s the person you met at the wrong time, when you were too guarded, too scattered, too certain you knew what you wanted.. Or the one who looked at you with a kind of tenderness you weren’t ready to receive..

Maybe your “what if” is not a grand romance at all, but something smaller and quieter: a late-night conversation you cut short, a lingering glance you looked away from, a shared joke that hinted at a deeper connection you never explored.. Whatever it is, it stays with you in a way that doesn’t demand attention, but also never fully disappears.. It visits you in reflective moments, on long train rides, in a half-lit room before sleep, in the pause between one chapter of your life and the next.. Not to torment you, but to remind you that you are capable of feeling deeply, of imagining other ways your life might have unfolded..

Some “what ifs” hurt.. Some simply hum in the background like a low, steady note.. All of them are proof that you have lived close enough to possibility to feel its pull.. And even though they never became part of your story in the obvious, visible way, they are still there, quietly shaping you from the inside, teaching you about desire, timing, courage, and the fragile, fleeting nature of chances we almost took..
