A Small Return

Before I begin today’s piece, I feel I owe you a small explanation..

The blog has been quieter than usual lately..

Not the kind of quiet that feels intentional and peaceful, or the kind that resembles a pause in a piece of music and leaves room to breathe.. More the other kind: the slightly awkward quiet that arrives when life pulls you elsewhere, when your attention fills to the brim and there is nothing left for words, no matter how much you want there to be..

So, not because I chose it.. The silence arrived on its own, the way a room empties when everyone steps outside for a while. The words were still there somewhere nearby, but life was asking first for my hands, my time, and my attention..

Each day felt like one of those tables that slowly fills with glasses, plates, notes, and scattered objects until you suddenly realize there is no space left to place anything else.. It wasn’t inspiration that was missing.. It was room.. That inner surface where you set down an idea, step back from it for a moment, and decide how you want to speak to it..

I never stopped writing.. The need to follow a thought all the way to its edge, to turn a feeling into a sentence, never truly disappears.. It stays there, like a lit room at the back of a house, even when you don’t have the time to walk inside..

Some nights, just before falling asleep, I could almost see the line of light beneath the door of that room.. I knew that if I opened it, there would be unfinished sentences waiting for me, notes asking to be written, thoughts quietly waving me over.. I simply didn’t have the energy to make it that far.. I remained in the hallway, promising myself that “one of these days, I’ll go back.”

Nor did I run out of stories.. Quite the opposite.. I may have had more than ever before.. Small stories hidden inside ordinary moments. Ideas waiting to be gathered. Images asking for room to breathe. They simply arrived faster than I could hold onto them.

There were moments when I thought, “I need to write this down somewhere.”

A stranger’s gesture on the metro..

A sentence overheard by accident..

A cup of coffee gone cold because someone needed something before I had a chance to drink it..

Small details that, in another season of life, would have become paragraphs. Instead, they passed by like trains I didn’t quite manage to board.. I watched them leave with a touch of nostalgia and the hope that perhaps one day they might return in another form..

And then May arrived.. With plans of its own.. And very little interest in mine..

It entered my life like that unexpected guest who arrives early, rearranges the furniture, throws open every window, and leaves you wondering what exactly happened after they are gone.. Suddenly, all the things that were supposed to happen “someday” became “right now.”

Tasks that had been sleeping quietly in the corner woke up all at once and demanded priority. My carefully made plans began to resemble a notebook someone had written over using a different color and a different handwriting.. It was still my life, but it no longer looked quite like the version I had imagined..

There were days when I couldn’t find a single corner in which to place my thoughts.. I moved from responsibility to responsibility.. From one act of care to the next.. From one small fire to another.. The hours melted into each other, and the days developed a rhythm I had not chosen but somehow had to follow..

Every morning began with a list, written or unwritten, and every evening I realized I had rearranged everything on it without intending to. Someone needed help. Something broke. Something new appeared. And suddenly I was once again walking a path I had never mapped..

Not all of it was difficult..

Much of it was meaningful..

Much of it was beautiful..

But even the things you love can exhaust you when they arrive without pause, without space, without breath.. And the strangest part was that everywhere I turned, I heard my name..

At home..

At work..

On the phone..

Inside lists..

Inside responsibilities..

Inside small and large needs..

And perhaps most of all, inside my own mind..

I heard my name being called to solve, organize, remember, support, explain.. Sometimes gently.. Sometimes urgently.. Sometimes insistently.. And beneath all of it, another voice, my own, quietly asked:

And you? Where do you fit? When will someone call your name without needing something from you?

It wasn’t resentment.. More a quiet realization that I was present for everyone else, but not always present for myself..

For a while, I tried to keep up with everything.. To hold the wheel tighter.. To move faster.. To trade a little rest for a little more progress.. I slipped into that familiar mindset:

If I push a little harder…

If I sleep a little less…

If I postpone what is mine…

Then everything will fit.

I tried to become more efficient.. More organized.. More capable.. As if the solution were simply finding the right time-management system rather than admitting that sometimes time itself is not enough for everything we ask of it.. But somewhere inside all that noise, I stopped running.. And simply observed..

I noticed what was happening to me, what i was carrying.. I noticed how easily I forget myself when I am trying to care for everything around me.. It felt as though I had stepped onto a balcony and looked down at my own path from above..

I saw the days lined up one after another.. The small sacrifices I made without noticing.. The number of times I said later to anything that belonged to me.. And I realized that “later” had been moving farther and farther away, like a date on a calendar that never quite arrives.. And there, in the middle of the chaos, I learned a few things.. Not grand revelations.. Not life-changing truths.. Just those small, quiet lessons that slowly alter the way you see the world.. The kind that arrive while washing dishes.. Or walking home alone.. The kind you feel before you understand..

Lessons without titles.. Without fanfare.. Just a slight shift inside you.. Something moves a fraction of an inch, and suddenly the view is no longer quite the same.. I realized how easily I forget to be gentle with myself.. How often I assume I should be able to handle everything.. How quickly I turn exhaustion into guilt.. As if being tired means failing.. As if resting is a form of laziness..

I have told other people countless times: “Rest. You need it.” And I have never judged them for it.. Yet when the advice was meant for me, it sounded different.. As if hidden beneath it was the accusation: “You didn’t do enough.” As though my worth could somehow be measured by how much I accomplished rather than how I felt while accomplishing it.. But it can’t.

Exhaustion means I am human.. Rest means I respect my limits.. It means I recognize that my body and mind are not machines. That they do not come equipped with a reset button that always returns them to the same place.. Some nights, the bravest thing I can do is simply say: “Enough for today.” And mean it.. Without feeling as though I am abandoning a battle..

There is a different kind of strength in stopping, not only in continuing.. And above all, I realized how deeply I need my stories.. Not because they solve my problems.. Not because they rescue me from reality.. But because they help me understand it.. When I write, responsibilities do not disappear.. Difficulties do not disappear.. They simply take shape.. They become sentences with beginnings, middles, and sometimes endings.. Where there was once only a vague pressure, words appear that can finally describe it.. And sometimes naming something is enough to make it easier to carry..

My stories are not an escape door.. They are a window.. A way of letting fresh air into the room.. A way of bringing order to scattered hours.. A way of recognizing the threads that connect different seasons of my life.. A way of remembering who I am when everything around me seems to move faster than I do.. Through words, I can revisit moments that have already passed and look at them with gentler eyes..

I can discover tenderness where I once saw only strain.. I can find continuity where I thought there was only randomness. I can remember that I am not merely a collection of hurried days.. I am a story still being written.. A story unfolding more gently and more deeply than I often realize while living it..

And so, today, I return.. Not with all the answers.. I am not even sure I have found all the questions yet.. But I return a little wiser about myself.. A little gentler with my weaknesses.. A little more willing to accept that human life was never designed to exist in perfect balance.. I no longer believe there is some secret formula that will keep every day perfectly aligned forever.. Instead, I am beginning to suspect that balance is something we rebuild again and again through small adjustments, much like shifting your posture ever so slightly to ease an ache in your back.. And sometimes you only realize you needed that adjustment after you have already become tired..

Some days lean.. Some weeks sweep us away.. Some seasons move through us like wind.. There are periods when it feels as though you are being dragged behind events moving too quickly to follow.. Others lift you higher than you imagined possible.. And then there are the quiet bridge-days, when nothing remarkable happens but thoughts quietly ripen within them, like fruit that simply needs time to sweeten..

Perhaps the goal is not to control everything.. Perhaps it is simply to notice where the weight lies and learn to move more gently within it.. To admit that “right now, I am a little absent from myself” without turning it into an accusation.. To recognize that sometimes our attention must belong to other people, other situations, other needs that cannot wait..

And when the weight falls heavily to one side, we can slowly take a few steps toward the other.. Without urgency.. Without dramatic declarations.. And perhaps I am finally more ready to listen to the stories whispered by quiet moments once we give them room to speak..  Those moments that rarely look impressive..

An afternoon on a sofa.

A solitary walk.

A glance through a window.

We often dismiss them as empty time.. Yet they frequently contain the clearest voices.. If we lower the noise and listen carefully, they often tell us the very things we have needed to hear for a long time.. Which brings me to today’s reflection.. A simple thought.. One I forget and rediscover again and again.. The rhythm of life is not only the wave that arrives.. It is also the wave that retreats.. Both belong..

There are seasons of arrival, new people, new responsibilities, new experiences, when everything seems to wash ashore at once.. And then come the quieter seasons, when something withdraws, leaving empty spaces in the sand.. Those empty spaces can feel unsettling.. But they are also necessary.. They allow us to see what remains.. What truly matters.. Stepping away from stillness is not failure.. It is the natural movement of a life that participates, loves, cares, and responds when called..

To lose touch with your inner rhythm for a while because you were helping, showing up, carrying, and caring does not mean you failed to protect yourself.. It means you were living.. It means you allowed yourself to be part of a story larger than your own plans.. The challenge is not to avoid intense seasons.. It is to remember that they are not your permanent definition.. The real failure would be forgetting that you can return.. Because the door is always there.. And today, after some time away, I am opening it again.. Not with a grand announcement.. Just slowly turning the handle.. Letting a little light in.. And seeing what still waits inside that illuminated room..

I know there will be other months like May.. I know the door may close again for a while.. But now I remember something important: Even when I wander away, the path back never disappears.. And for today, that is enough..
