When You’re In on the Joke

And you smile anyway.

Rose was never naïve.

She always knew when something was funny.
More importantly, she knew when she was part of the joke.

She sat in front of her mirror, wearing her green dress with the small dotted pattern, watching her reflection wink back at her.

It wasn’t delusion.. It was an agreement..

The joke isn’t always cruel.. Sometimes it’s simply the realization that the world does not operate the way we once believed it did, and that somewhere along the way, we participated.

The Uncomfortable Clarity

There is a moment when you understand, that you were not only the victim, nor the observer, but fully present in the story, aware, even if you pretended not to be.. That is the awkward part.. Because once you’re in on the joke, you can’t pretend you don’t get it anymore..

Rose learned to sit with that clarity.. To resist blaming herself.. To resist polishing the memory into something prettier than it was..

She learned to simply recognize it..

The Power of the Smile

The smile in the mirror is not sarcasm.. It is self-awareness..

It says: “Yes. I saw it. I understood. I was there.”

And you do not run., You do not erase the memory.. You do not rewrite the script to make yourself look smaller or more innocent.. You accept it..

Rose was never afraid of being in on the joke. She was only afraid of not realizing it..

Closing

The mirror kept winking, and for the first time, she did not feel embarrassment.. Only a small, quiet strength..

Because when you are in on the joke, and you know it, no one gets to use you as the punchline..

Rose,
