Reconciliation with the Cycle

Why the Wolf Howls in January

Long ago, before people measured time with calendars, January had no name..

They called it simply the month when everything holds its breath..

It was then that the Wolf first appeared..

Not hungry, as some believe..
Not savage..
But alone..

The Wolf walked through snow covered paths and watched humans gather around their fires, afraid of the dark, forgetting who they were before fear taught them caution..

So one night, beneath a full moon, he lifted his head and howled..

Not for help..
But for remembrance..

His cry did not frighten the forest..
It awakened it..

The trees remembered their roots..
The animals remembered their paths..
And humans.. for a brief moment, remembered that they could endure the winter..

Since then, they say, the first full moon of the year carries that howl within it..

Even when it cannot be heard.. Even when the moon hides behind clouds..

Because the Wolf does not howl for light..
He howls for those walking through dark seasons who need a reminder:

Winter is not an ending..
It is a test of strength..

And always, afterwards, spring finds its way back..

Until the next New Moon, we listen, we write, and we follow the stories the sky is willing to share..
